Child Custody and Child Support
Child custody and child support decisions must be made not only in cases of divorce, but also in paternity cases. You also may need to go back to court again to ask the judge for a modification of child support because of changed circumstances. If your income has substantially decreased, you can ask the court for a reduction in child support. On the other hand, if the child's needs have greatly increased, the custodial parent may make a case for an increase in support. There are two steps to get a protective order. The first step is to get a temporary order from the court. This is fairly easy to obtain. The second step is to get a "permanent" order, which lasts 12 months. This is not automatic. You need a lawyer to make a strong case on your behalf. Once a permanent order has been granted, the judge will decide on living arrangements, financial support, and child custody and visitation.
